“Is it the cost of one device or the fact you’re connecting many devices? We have to look,” says Kevin Petersen, AT&T’s SVP of wireless product marketing.I don’t know if these thoughts are code for “5G is expensive and we need to defray the cost,” whether these carriers just haven’t figured out pricing yet, or whether they don’t want to tip their hands early, but we’re getting down to the wire — especially for AT&T’s promised end-of-2018 launch. And I do wonder how the death of net neutrality will embolden the carriers to do things that would have been unthinkable before. One of the reasons carriers argued for the end of net neutrality was to open up “innovative” business models, and it’s possible they’ll look at bundling their own services, or those of partners, with free or discounted 5G connectivity.

Lastly, I thought it was especially weird that Verizon wouldn’t talk about what kind of speeds we can expect from 5G, considering Verizon said months ago that its 5G Moto Mod would produce download speeds of up to 5Gbps, and AT&T recently told us we should see at least gigabit speeds. When I went back to look at Motorola’s 5G Mod website, I noticed a discrepancy: the fine print at the very bottom of the page says that we should expect peak download speeds of more like 300–500Mbps. That’s still fast, but it’s not really 5G. I pinged Verizon last night to ask about that, and I’ll let you know what I hear.Amon confirmed to The Verge that it’s where Qualcomm will launch its next flagship Snapdragon processor for 5G devices, and he also namedropped a separate “Snapdragon 1000” chip for always-connected ARM-powered PCs — a processor rumored to finally be powerful enough to challenge Intel’s Y and U-series CPUs in ultrathin laptops and 2-in-1s.

We won’t get details until Tuesday, but Maui is an important moment for Qualcomm. Apple seems to be getting stronger every year, while Intel is definitely not. Apple’s own processors are getting so fast, so quickly, that an iPad Pro could arguably beat a new Intel-powered MacBook in raw speed, and the rumors that the Mac will ditch Intel chips for Apple’s own ARM processors are starting to make an awful lot of sense.snapdragon
If true, Qualcomm will want to have a rival laptop chip, and that means showing it can actually provide enough performance to make Windows laptops and tablets worth buying. Amon agrees that wasn’t true of the disastrous Windows RT, and I’d argue it wasn’t true of the Snapdragon 850 laptop chip that Qualcomm released last year, either (read our Samsung Galaxy Book 2 review), but maybe this time will be different?

Amon says the “Snapdragon 1000” will support more memory, which is a big deal all by itself — the Galaxy Book 2’s 4GB didn’t feel like enough for Windows.But Qualcomm’s president also hints that Maui won’t be all about CPU performance, because in his view, 5G connectivity makes it less important how much computing power you can fit in your pocket or shoulder bag, and because more and more key smartphone features (machine learning, image processing, graphics, etc.) are no longer primarily handled by the CPU. “Apple has achieved remarkable single-threaded CPU performance,” he says, “but ask yourself if the most important thing on a processor is the single-threaded CPU performance?”

There’s some truth to that, but the idea that 5G is suddenly going to turn your ARM-powered mobile chip into a supercomputer is quite a stretch — and it’s hype we’ve heard before. LTE was also supposed to provide low enough latency for on-demand processing, but splitting a processor load between a local device and a remote server has proven a pretty tough business so far. (The first generation of cloud gaming companies got absorbed by Sony instead of prospering on their own, and Sony’s service recently added an option to just And it’s really not a great argument for a Windows laptop, where raw local performance is key. Plus, winning over Windows users will mean figuring out some lingering app compatibility issues. “Windows RT was a big disaster because you have no apps,” Amon recalls. That’s not quite the case anymore now that Windows on ARM supports “legacy” x86 apps to a degree, but he also believes that demand for those legacy apps is shrinking as more people use a phone as their primary computer. Amon argues that if what people want from a laptop is mobile apps on a larger screen, Qualcomm already has enough processing power.

Clearly there’s going to be a lot of hype to unpack in Maui, both in terms of what 5G can actually deliver — when, where, how much — and in terms of whether Qualcomm’s new processors will make the first wave of 5G devices feel like a huge upgrade instead of a beta test for people with money to burn. I fondly remember bragging about the blazing speeds I saw with my first 4G LTE dongle, but the early phones were a bit of a mess at launch.But there may just be enough new tech here to justify a bit of hype. I light up every time I imagine a wireless connection that could totally wipe the floor with the landline service I have at home. That’s the feeling that Qualcomm, Verizon, and AT&T are trying to foster. Now they just have to prove they can make it real.

Microsoft’s new Surface commercial is a musical adaption of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”:“Grandma, don’t run out and buy an iPad. It was fine when I was six, but now I’m 10. My dreams are a big so I need a real computer.”Microsoft, or well, a 10-year-old girl in the commercial, is obviously referring to Apple’s ongoing ads to position the iPad Pro as a computer and competitor to a laptop. Apple first started this by asking “what’s a computer?” for an iPad ad, and more recently tried to convince us that tablets are the future of computing. Defenders of laptops and advocates of tablets have been debating computers vs. tablets for eight years, during which time Apple has slowly evolved its iPad to include a keyboard (like a laptop) and a stylus (like a Surface).

“We need to build a crescendo,” says Amon. Qualcomm obviously has a vested interest in making people believe that 5G is actually meaningfully better than the cell connections we already have now. “You’re not going to change your phone unless the battery life is higher, the form factor is attractive, and you need companies that can actually deliver the performance,” he says. (Early LTE devices were notoriously thick and drained batteries quickly.)That’s why, even out of the gate, he says 5G will be dramatically faster and dramatically more responsive, to the point that bandwidth-sapping uses like streaming video will feel effortless.

“Today you stream music everywhere. You don’t download music anymore; even if you have low coverage, you have enough quality to stream music. 5G will do that for video,” Amon says, before moving on to fancier, further-out predictions like unlimited storage and on-demand processing power from the cloud that can, he imagines, virtually cram the power of a Magic Leap-like augmented reality headset into a normal pair of glasses.High-flying promises of fast internet and cloud connections are nothing new, but historically they have always crashed into the reality of actual network performance that doesn’t live up to them. And the way that Qualcomm, AT&T, Verizon, and others hope to achieve the performance out of the gate may mean a slightly different, spottier network than the ones we’re used to right now.

AT&T and Verizon both say they’re exclusively rolling out millimeter wave (mmWave) radios, which inherently provide far more bandwidth and capacity than today’s networks. But at 39GHz and 28GHz, those millimeter wave signals also don’t travel as far or penetrate buildings as easily as conventional cellular. That means you’ll probably drop down to LTE speeds when you transition indoors, and in order to cover the same area as today’s LTE cell towers, carriers will need to provide many more smaller cell sites. AT&T says it’s focusing on outdoor cells first, but is also looking at indoor ones for public venues like stadiums and concert halls.5G NR does have a solve for wider coverage, too: “sub-6” spectrum, meaning radio frequencies below 6GHz, which include everything from traditional Wi-Fi (2.4GHz, 5GHz) down to the decently building-penetrating 700MHz frequency that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon use for a large portion of their LTE networks today. (T-Mobile recently added some 600MHz as well.)

But AT&T and Verizon say they aren’t prioritizing sub-6 5G quite yet, partly because the carriers don’t have enough spectrum at lower frequencies to wow with speed. “With a 20MHz band of 600MHz [spectrum], you’re not going to get that lift. You’d have to ask yourself what’s different, what does 5G really mean,” says Verizon’s Palmer.It also might be partially because sub-6 smartphone chips may not be ready yet, at least for the particular spectrum pairings that US carriers currently use. “The FDD, which is what the bulk of operators have ... the silicon to support that FDD spectrum doesn’t become available until later in 2019,” says Gordon Mansfield, AT&T’s VP of converged access and device technology.

The upshot? Instead of promising to launch their 5G NR networks in entire cities at once, AT&T has only committed to bringing 5G to unspecified “parts” of the 19 locations it’s named so far, and the fastest forms of 5G may never cover every person. “Our ambition is large... that doesn’t mean we’re going to blanket every corner of the country with millimeter wave,” says Palmer, adding that she will “most likely” start in areas with the most traffic and demand, too. T-Mobile says it will have a nationwide 5G network in 2020, but it’s not clear how much of that will be millimeter wave and how much sub-6. It’s using both. None of this means your device will just drop off the network when you’re out of 5G range, though. AT&T and others say they are building their 5G NR tech on top of existing 4G LTE to start. Your devices will be connected to both LTE and 5G NR simultaneously and switch between them seamlessly, says Mansfield.

Plus, both AT&T and Verizon expect current LTE networks to get faster as 5G rolls out — partly because people moving to 5G will free up room on the LTE networks, partly because of all the underlying infrastructure improvements the carriers are making to ensure their 5G networks will be faster, and partly because we still haven’t reached the limit of what LTE can do. AT&T even launched a fake 5G network called “5G Evolution” last year to show off how existing LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro techniques could reach theoretical download speeds of 400Mbps. (Other carriers rolled out those techniques even earlier, though.)TL;DR: not all 5G will be equal, the faster flavor of 5G will come first but it’ll be spotty, and the rest of the time you’ll probably be surfing on LTE. But at least it could be faster LTE than you’re getting today.

Qualcomm’s third annual Snapdragon Technology Summit is happening in Maui today, and it promises to be the first — and last — major public debut of blazing-fast 5G before the new cellular standard launches in the US for real. And while inviting 330 people to a tropical island setting might seem frivolous, there’s some serious money and technology at stake.You see, AT&T is promising to launch real 5G NR cellular in 12 cities by the end of 2018, mere weeks from today. That will change this week. AT&T and Verizon tell The Verge they’ll have live 5G networks in Maui at Qualcomm’s big event, and we’ll be able to try a real, 5G-enabled phone (maybe even two) and a pocketable 5G mobile hotspot for the first time.Qualcomm will also reveal a new Snapdragon processor designed to appear in actual 5G phones, and a “Snapdragon 1000” processor for a new wave of always-connected Windows laptops. (Maybe, after a decade and numerous attempts, Qualcomm will finally demo a smartbook worth buying.) Qualcomm will attempt to use the rising wave of 5G hype to help raise the profile of its new chips — and make the case that the two are potentially connected.After speaking to executives from Qualcomm, Verizon, and AT&T, we’re getting a far clearer picture of what they hope 5G will offer on day one, even though an awful lot of key details are still up in the air.

Even if AT&T launches a 5G mobile network by the end of the year — AT&T said “in the next few weeks” over five weeks ago, and it’s sticking by “end of the year” as of today — you won’t just be able to run out and buy a 5G phone. The only confirmed device so far for AT&T’s network is the chunky Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot, and AT&T tells us that the so-called “puck” will be its only 5G device available at launch. If you buy the existing, Verizon-exclusive Moto Z3 — let’s just say it’s not our top pick today — Verizon says its first 5G device will be a magnetic, modular 5G Moto Mod attachment you can snap onto that phone to add speedy 5G NR connectivity, too. Verizon says we’ll get to try the 5G Moto Mod in Maui as well.

If those aren’t your cup of tea, you’ll probably be waiting until Q2 2019 at the earliest. That’s when Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon expects the first real wave of smartphones to arrive. And that’s when Samsung says it’ll have a 5G phone on Verizon’s network, if not others too.”We are working, so as early as the second quarter of 2019, you’ll have smartphones being launched across the United States, across Europe, across South Korea, Australia. You’ll note that Qualcomm’s president says “Android,” not Apple — rumor is Apple won’t release a 5G iPhone until 2020. That shouldn’t be much of a surprise, considering how the original iPhone didn’t yet have 3G, and the iPhone 4S didn’t add LTE, even though both were available in competing phones at the time. If that sounds like a slow start for mobile 5G, know that LTE had a similarly slow launch, even if in hindsight it seems like it was faster. Verizon’s LTE network went live in December 2010, but those once-amazing speeds were only available to people who plugged giant dongles into their PCs until the first Verizon LTE smartphone launched in March 2011. (MetroPCS managed to get its first LTE phones out a bit more quickly.)

At least this time, one 5G standard — known as 5G NR and created by the GSMA — has practically everybody on board. Back in the day, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint were trying to push HSPA and WiMax as their LTE alternatives. But even Verizon, which originally promoted and has already deployed the competing 5G TF standard to deliver wireless internet to homes in four US cities, says all of its future deployments will be on 5G NR instead, and that 5G TF was just a way to push the industry to quickly adopt an actual global standard. For all they knew, 5G TF could have been it.

LA Times: There was a question at a “Destroyer” Q&A for Nicole Kidman about how her cop character was sort of masculine. How did you feel about the gender stereotype surrounding that?Kusama: There’s also a somewhat casual aside that the role that she’s playing is something that would typically be played by a man. But I actually feel like the strength of the character comes from her vulnerability, her complexity, her irascibility but also a sort of tenderness. LA Times: With an action movie like “Black Panther,” are you still thinking about it in a political way?Coogler: “Black Panther” is inherently about an African politician in a country that’s fictitious, but what’s fictitious about it is directly pointing a finger at the presence of colonization. It’s a country that escaped colonization and maintained its independence and dominion over their resources. That’s why they’re a superpower. So the film is going to be political. It’s going to deal with colonization. It’s going to deal with what it means to be African. So we were able to lean into those things. I’m actually more impressed when people are able to deftly handle those things that aren’t (so literally in the plot). Like with “Roma,” you know, I’m watching a film about a domestic worker. As soon as the kid tells the maid, “Hey, why do you talk like that?” I’m like, “This is a colonization issue here. These are the indigenous people who at some point or another had been conquered and now she’s speaking another language. So it was almost like the inverse of what we were talking about. For (“Black Panther”) it was easy. It was right there on the surface.

Cuaron: Well it was easier because I was dealing with memories, and it’s the understanding of the person. There are maybe political elements to that understanding. But it was about doing things that made sense or that felt right, not so much about, “OK, here I need this comment.” The fact that you have the characters, by de facto there’s already a comment. When you have a domestic worker who has an indigenous background in a middle-class Mexican white family, there’s already something going on.

Randy and Joyska Tkachyk were leaving church last week when they noticed a series of missed calls from Randy’s mother. When they called back, she shared the devastating news: “Your house is on fire.”The Tkachyks drove for an agonizing hour to get back to their farm in Piney, Man., to find rubble and embers in the place where their self-built home was still under construction.“It was gone,” said Joyska in an interview with CTV Winnipeg. “It was a very tall structure and it was just gone. There was nothing there but rubble and some small flames.”The family’s dog died in the blaze, which fire inspectors said likely started when a laptop with an overheated lithium-ion battery burst into flames. Health Canada says that common lithium-ion batteries are “more susceptible to being damaged than other types of batteries” and users should take precautions when charging them.

The Tkachyks don’t yet have an estimate for damages, but the fire snuffed out a year’s work by Randy, who began building an 1,800-square-foot addition to the original 1,100-square-foot bungalow in 2017.“This was going to be the rest of our dream home,” he said. “It’s difficult. When you build something from scratch, you’re proud of it. But whatever man builds, it doesn’t last forever here.”The Tkachyks have found comfort in their community and their faith during the ordeal. “It was devastating,” said Joyska. “Yet at the same time we looked at it and literally the thought in my head was ‘The Lord gives, the lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.’”Neighbours immediately began to offer clothes, food and shelter after the news spread. “We have never experienced this kind of outpouring in our lives,” she said.

Bis zweifach soll man es nicht merken, doch darüber hinaus geht es zulasten der Qualität.Die Dual-Kamera sorgt außerdem im Portrait-Modus für den Bokeh-Effekt, bei dem der Hintergrund unscharf und Personen im Bild scharf dargestellt werden. Auch ein schnellerer Autofokus ist mit an Bord. Videos könnt Ihr in 4K-Qualität mit 30 Bildern pro Sekunde aufnehmen, bei Full-HD-Qualität sind es 60 Bilder pro Sekunde. Im Pro-Modus stellt Ihr manuell alle wichtigen Faktoren wie ISO, Weißabgleich, Belichtung und Co. selbst ein und könnt die Fotos sogar im RAW-Format speichern, um sie am Computer besser nachzubearbeiten.

Um die Qualität der Fotos zu verbessern, hat OnePlus für das neue Smartphone eine Partnerschaft mit den Kameraexperten von DxO geschlossen. Den Bokeh-Effekt im Portrait-Modus empfanden wir im Juni noch teilweise als zu stark. Vor allem die Kanten des Objekts waren oft unscharf. Mit den letzten Updates hat OnePlus hier ordentlich nachgebessert. Schade ist trotzdem, dass es keine Möglichkeit gibt, den Bokeh-Effekt manuell zu "entschärfen".Insgesamt arbeiten die verbauten Kamerasensoren im Smartphone sehr gut, die Bilder sind von hoher Qualität. Auch bei wenig Licht gelingen noch akzeptable Resultate. Die Farben werden allerdings etwas zu intensiv und übersättigt dargestellt. Als Betriebssystem kam zum Release das hauseigene Oxygen OS 4.5.0 zum Einsatz. Inzwischen sind wir durch Updates auf Version 4.5.8. Die basiert auf Android 7.1.1, wurde aber softwareseitig um einige Funktionen erweitert. So gibt es zum Beispiel mehr Gesten. Malt Ihr mit dem Finger Buchstaben auf das Display, könnt Ihr diese Gesten z.B. mit dem Öffnen einer App verknüpfen. Euch stehen O, V, S, M und W zur Verfügung. Außerdem lässt sich das Smartphone bei einem Anruf stumm schalten, wenn Ihr es auf den Bildschirm legt.

Da es die meisten Apps sowohl für iOS als auch für Android gibt, müsst Ihr wahrscheinlich auch mit einem Android-Smartphone oder -Tablet nicht auf Eure Lieblingsanwendungen verzichten. Bei Apps wie Netflix beispielsweise müsst Ihr lediglich die entsprechende Anwendung für Android im Google Play Store herunterladen und Euch mit Eurem Account einloggen, um alles wie gewohnt vorzufinden.Auf den ersten Blick erinnert das Design schon an das iPhone 7 Plus. Doch bei genauerer Betrachtung treten doch viele Unterschiede zutage. Ich würde sagen, es übernimmt die Designsprache aktueller Highend-Smartphones: Metallkörper, abgerundete Ecken und Kanten, so dünn wie möglich.Etwas schade ist es dennoch, dass OnePlus über die Jahre sein eigenes, besonderes Konzept verloren hat. An den Start gegangen waren die China-Smartphones mit einem konvexen Körper und der rauen Sandstone-Rückseite. Doch auch in diesem Jahr gibt es die Sandstone-Rückseite wieder nur als Hülle zum Draufstecken.

Sollte das Problem danach immer noch bestehen, dann probiert es mit einem Wiederherstellen der Standardwerte. Zuvor solltet Ihr jedoch sicherheitshalber ein Backup Eurer Daten erstellen. Ist dies erfolgt, dann schaltet Euer HTC One M8 aus. Anschließend müsst Ihr die "Leiser"-Taste etwas länger drücken und dann die "Ein/Aus"-Taste ebenfalls länger gedrückt halten. Dies könnte durch die gespeicherten Cache-Daten der App verursacht werden. Deshalb solltet Ihr in diesem Fall den Anwendungs-Cache löschen. Eure Nachrichten werden dabei nicht gelöscht.

Um den Cache der Nachrichten-App zu löschen, müsst Ihr als Erstes in die Einstellungen Eures HTC One M8 gehen. Hier tippt Ihr dann auf "Apps". Jetzt tippt Ihr auf der Registerkarte "Alle" auf die Nachrichten-Anwendung. Es erscheint ein Fenster, wo Ihr abschließend auf "Cache löschen" tippen müsst.Einige Besitzer eines One M8 klagen zudem über Gmail-Probleme nach der Installation des Lollipop-Updates. So sollen beispielsweise Google-Mail-Benachrichtigungen von einzelnen Accounts nicht mehr ankommen. In diesem Fall solltet Ihr die betreffenden Google-Accounts nach einem Backup neu erstellen. Andere Nutzer klagen hingegen über eine drastische Reduzierung der Akku-Laufzeit nach dem Update sowie extrem langsame Ladezeiten. In beiden Fällen könnt Ihr versuchen, ob auch hier das Wiederherstellen der Standardwerte Abhilfe verschafft. Führt den sogenannten Factory Reset wie bereits vorab beschrieben durch.

Das Galaxy Note 8 soll Gerüchten zufolge auch in einer dunkelblauen Farbausführung erscheinen. Wie das Gerät in "Deep Sea Blue" aussieht, soll nun ein geleaktes Bild zeigen. Allerdings ist auf der Abbildung nur die Vorderseite des Smartphones sichtbar.Offenbar ist nicht nur das Galaxy Note 8 selbst im dunkelblauen Farbton gehalten: Über Twitter hat der Leak-Experte Evan Blass ein Bild geteilt, dem zufolge auch der S Pen einen Anstrich in Dunkelblau erhält. Da nur die Vorderseite abgebildet ist, lässt sich die Farbe beim Gerät selbst nur oben und unten ganz an den Rändern erkennen. Wie auch schon beim Galaxy S8 wird die Vorderseite des Note 8 demnach oben und unten mit schmalen schwarzen Rändern versehen sein – den Rest des Platzes nimmt wohl das Display ein, sodass "Deep Sea Blue" wohl nur auf der Rückseite so richtig zur Geltung kommt.

Samsung veröffentlicht seine Top-Smartphones üblicherweise nicht in allen Regionen in der gleichen Farbe. Nun nutzt Ihr die Tastenkombination aus Power-Button, "Lauter"-Taste und Home-Button. Sobald das Gerät vibriert, lasst Ihr den Power-Button los, die anderen beiden Tasten aber gedrückt.

Sollte das Problem danach immer noch bestehen, dann probiert es mit einem Wiederherstellen der Standardwerte. Zuvor solltet Ihr jedoch sicherheitshalber ein Backup Eurer Daten erstellen. Das Galaxy Note 8 soll Gerüchten zufolge auch in einer dunkelblauen Farbausführung erscheinen. Wie das Gerät in "Deep Sea Blue" aussieht, soll nun ein geleaktes Bild zeigen. Allerdings ist auf der Abbildung nur die Vorderseite des Smartphones sichtbar.Offenbar ist nicht nur das Galaxy Note 8 selbst im dunkelblauen Farbton gehalten: Über Twitter hat der Leak-Experte Evan Blass ein Bild geteilt, dem zufolge auch der S Pen einen Anstrich in Dunkelblau erhält. Da nur die Vorderseite abgebildet ist, lässt sich die Farbe beim Gerät selbst nur oben und unten ganz an den Rändern erkennen. Wie auch schon beim Galaxy S8 wird die Vorderseite des Note 8 demnach oben und unten mit schmalen schwarzen Rändern versehen sein – den Rest des Platzes nimmt wohl das Display ein, sodass "Deep Sea Blue" wohl nur auf der Rückseite so richtig zur Geltung kommt.

Das "MacBook Touch" besitzt also keine physische Tastatur mehr. Stattdessen wird diese bei Bedarf wie bei Smartphones und Tablets eingeblendet. Für das haptische Feedback, das viele moderne Ultrabooks ja leider vermissen lassen, würde Apples Technologie 3D Touch sorgen. Und wenn gerade einmal keine Textarbeit anfällt, lässt sich das Display für andere kreative Aufgaben verwenden.Wie ihr auf dem Bild am Ende des Artikels sehen könnt, ließe sich das zweite Touch-Display des MacBooks in Verbindung mit dem Apple Pencil etwa als Zeichen-Tablet nutzen. Darüber nehmen eine weiterentwickelte Touch Bar und ein "Touch Dock" Platz. Außerdem wachsen das im aktuellen Modell ohnehin bereits riesige Trackpad und die Lautsprecher auf die doppelte Größe an.

Apropos Größe: Das MacBook Touch soll das 17-Zoll-Format zurückbringen, das viele Apple-Enthusiasten seit Jahren schmerzlich vermissen. Sollte es sich allerdings bewahrheiten, dass macOS und iOS sich künftig die gleichen Programme teilen, könnte ein MacBook mit berührungsempfindlichem Bildschirm doch noch ein Thema werden – immerhin dürften viele Apps die Eingabemethode dann bereits unterstützen.Probleme nach dem Update auf Android 5.0 Lollipop: Wie auch bei anderen Geräten können auf dem Samsung Galaxy S5 nach dem Update auf die neue Android-Version Schwierigkeiten auftreten. Das ist kein Grund zur Sorge, da mitunter das alte Betriebssystem nicht komplett überschrieben wird. Infolgedessen kann es sein, dass einzelne Funktionen haken oder nicht mehr zur Verfügung stehen. Auch sind noch nicht alle Apps mit der neuen Android-Version kompatibel. Wir haben ein paar der häufigsten Probleme aufgegriffen und beschreiben Möglichkeiten zur Behebung.

Egal ob Boom 3 oder Megaboom 3, beide Lautsprecher bieten einen kristallklaren 360-Grad-Sound der Räume ausfüllt. Die Bässe sind kräftig, aber nicht zu übertrieben. Die Höhen stechen hervor, ohne weh zu tun und die Mitten runden das wunderbare Soundpaket ab. Besser geht es kaum, wenn man mobile Lautsprecher haben will. Dabei sind beide Lautsprecher sehr laut – wobei der Megaboom erwartungsgemäß etwas mehr Power hat. In meiner Wohnung habe ich mich nicht getraut sie lauter als 50 Prozent aufzudrehen. Dreht man die Lautsprecher richtig auf, leidet die Soundqualität nicht. Alles bleibt verständlich und es gibt keine Übersteuerung.Apropos Mobilität: Die Boom 3 und Megaboom 3 könnt ihr weiter von der Bluetooth-Quelle entfernen als ihre Vorgänger – sofern das Abspielgerät auch Bluetooth 5.0 unterstützt. Dann soll die maximale Reichweite im Freien bei 45 Metern liegen. Im Test stellten die Wände innerhalb der Wohnung kein Problem dar.

Der UE Boom 3 und der Megaboom 3 sind klassische Bluetooth-Lautsprecher und benötigen ein Smartphone, Tablet oder Computer als Quelle für ihren Ton. Sie haben anders als der UE Blast und Megablast keinen persönlichen Assistenten an Bord, beherrschen kein Multiroom und sind nicht ins WLAN eingebunden. Ihr könnt über die neu gestaltete Boom-App unter iOS und Android aber bis zu 150 der Lautsprecher mit der PartyUp-Funktion zur gemeinsamen Wiedergabe verbinden. Das funktioniert denkbar einfach und klingt sehr schön. Zumindest bei den zwei Boom-Lautsprecher im Test konnte ich keine Verzögerung bei der Wiedergabe hören und hatte schönen Sound, der sich aus zwei Zimmern in der Wohnung verteilte oder in einem Raum für einen Stereo-Sound sorgte.

Zusätzlich hält die Boom-App einen Equalizer bereit. Hier kann man den Klang mit mehreren Voreinstellungen anpassen oder selber Hand anlegen und die Regler verschieben.Mit dem Magic Button hat sich UE etwas ganz neues für den Boom 3 und Megaboom 3 ausgedacht. Mit der Taste auf der Oberseite pausiert, startet und überspringt man jetzt nicht nur Songs, sondern kann auch direkt Playlisten aufrufen. Dafür muss man die Taste lange gedrückt halten und zuvor in der Boom-App seine Favoriten unter den Playlisten festlegen. Kleine Einschränkung: Unter Android funktioniert das momentan nur mit Deezer und unter iOS nur mit Apple Music. Es sollen aber weitere Streaming-Dienste folgen. Da die Lautsprecher keine WLAN-Verbindung haben, müssen sie zudem mit dem Smartphone gekoppelt sein, damit sich der Zauber entfalten kann. Das kann dann allerdings in der Tasche bleiben.

Die beiden Boom 3 lassen sich drahtlos aufladen. Dafür muss man allerdings die Ladestation Boost Up für 40 Euro zusätzlich kaufen — im Paket mit den Lautsprechern kostet sie nur 30 Euro. Und ja, es ist bequem sie zum Aufladen einfach auf die Station zu stellen, aber auch mit einem Micro-USB-Kabel kann man sie immer noch problemlos aufladen.Wie schon die Vorgänger überzeugen auch der UE Boom 3 und der UE Megaboom 3 vor allem mit ihrem hervorragenden Sound. Die Robustheit sowie der Party-Modus und der Equalizer sind schöne Zugaben. Der Magic Button konnte mich in der Praxis bisher aber nicht von seiner Notwendigkeit überzeugen. Für unverbindliche Preisempfehlungen von 149 Euro für den Boom 3 und 199 Euro für den Megaboom 3, bekommt ihr ein sehr gutes Preis-Sound-Paket. Die größte Konkurrenz kommt aus dem eigenen Haus. Der UE Boom 2 oder der Megaboom klingen ebenfalls immer noch hervorragend und sind günstiger zu bekommen.

Eltern müssen bei der Übergabe von Smartphone oder Tablet an die Kinder besonders gut aufpassen. Für den bestmöglichen Schutz der Kleinen stellt Android Lollipop eine ganz praktische Funktion bereit. Mittels "Screen-Pinning" schaltet Ihr nur eine einzige App für den Gebrauch frei. Ansonsten bleibt Euer Mobilgerät gesperrt.Das ursprünglich als "Screen Pinning" bekannte Feature steht Euch ab Android 5.0 Lollipop unter dem deutschen Namen "Bildschirm anheften" zur Verfügung. Der Name lässt erahnen, worum es geht: Ihr fixiert den aktuellen Bildschirminhalt, respektive gezielt eine einzige App. Nutzer des Geräts können dann nur noch über einen speziellen Entsperrvorgang wieder auf andere Geräteinhalte zugreifen.Ideal also, um Kinder vor unsachgemäßem Gebrauch zu schützen. Alternativ würde es auch mit der Einrichtung mehrerer Benutzerkonten klappen. Das ist aber umständlicher und nicht die schnellste Lösung.

Vor dem MWC in Barcelona stellte der koreanische Hersteller im vergangenen Jahr das LG L90 gemeinsam mit dem LG L70 und dem L40 vor. Fraglich ist nun, ob die beiden kleineren Modelle ebenfalls eine Aktualisierung auf Android Lollipop erfahren werden. Das LG L90 ist immerhin das einzige der drei Geräte, das einen Quad-Core-Prozessor besitzt, wenngleich das LG L70 zumindest ebenfalls über 1 GB RAM verfügt. LG selbst hat noch keine Aussage dazu getroffen, ob auch Besitzer eines der schwächeren Modelle mit dem Update auf Android Lollipop rechnen dürfen.Auch das LG G2 mini ist noch ein heißer Kandidat für ein Software-Update durch den Hersteller. Dessen Ausstattung ähnelt der des LG L90 nämlich stark. Lediglich die Hardware-Buttons zum Ein- und Ausschalten sowie die Lautstärkeregler träg das G2 mini nicht an der Seite, sondern wie das Premium-Modell LG G3 auf der Rückseite. Wir gehen stark davon aus, dass LG auch dieses Smartphone, das zur Fußball WM 2014 sogar in den Farben Schwarz, Rot und Gold erschienen war, in naher Zukunft mit einem Update auf Android Lollipop versehen wird.
